Sony Advances Its Usage of Green Electricity
Sony Corp. announced on December 4, 2007, that it will aim to reduce the amount of CO2 emitted by its subsidiary companies in Japan and around the world by 50,000 tons by 2010 through further promotion of renewable energies. This will be a four-fold CO2 reduction compared to fiscal 2006, when the introduction of renewable energies across the Sony Group helped eliminate about 13,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

The company developed the Green Power Certification System in collaboration with Tokyo Electric Co. in 2001 in Japan, and has received the Certificate since then. In addition to a consignment contract for wind-power energy, it signed contracts for the annual purchase of geothermal energy (over 10 million kWh) in April 2007, and wood biomass energy (over 16 million kWh) in October 2007. The group's total amount of renewable energies purchased in 2007 reached about 36.4 million kWh, which is equivalent to a CO2 reduction of about 13,760 tons.

Sony also promotes renewable enegry in Europe, and switched to hydropower in its two Austrian sites, Sony DADC (Digital Audio Disc Corporation) Austria A.G., an optical disc production factory, and Sony Austria GmbH, a distributor.

Sony has also started offering an option for green energy purchases of 1 kWh in its point program, in which consumers earn points through internet shopping or shopping using the Sony Card. A subsidiary company, Sony Style (Japan) Inc. purchases large amounts of green electricity and divides it into smaller amount, allowing program users to purchase it through their PCs or mobile phones for the first time in Japan.
