On December 12, 2007, Sony Corp., the major Japanese consumer electronics company, announced a new campaign to promote green power generation and support environmental education starting in March 2008. The campaign is being conducted jointly with the Solar Bear Fund (Sorabea-kikin), which was founded in 2007 by a Japanese nonprofit organization, Solar City Japan, with the goal of encouraging the spread of renewable energy and environmental education by providing financial support for installing renewable energy generation facilities in Japan and abroad.

In this campaign, Sony will donate part of its revenue from selling retail batteries, including rechargeable batteries and battery chargers (but not including some types such as lithium-ion batteries). Starting in March 2008, the packages of these battery products will display "solar bear" campaign characters designed to look like polar bears, and the catchphrase, "Let's support green energy." The money donated by Sony from this campaign will be used to install solar power generation units at kindergartens and nursery schools.

Sony will be managing the campaign as a member of the Solar Bear Fund. Other members of the Sony Group have also participated; Sony Creative Products Inc. designed the "Solar Bear" campaign character and Sony Magazines Inc, published a picture book related to the campaign.

Other greenhouse gas emission reduction measures by the Sony Group include introducing renewable energy generation systems such as solar, geothermal and biomass power at their own facilities. As an addition to these in-company efforts, Sony expects the new campaign to further promote renewable energy and help educate children on environmental issues.
