Modal Shift to Ferries Cuts Both CO2 Emissions and Costs
Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., an electronic equipment manufacturer headquartered in Kyoto, Japan, announced on October 25, 2007 that its logistics subsidiary, Transup Japan Co., has won the Environmental Prize at the FY2007 Logistics Awards sponsored by the Japan Institute of Logistics Systems. Dainippon Screen has shifted transportation means of its semiconductor and liquid crystal manufacturing equipment, etc., to ferry shipment provided by Transup Japan. This effort was evaluated highly, leading to the latest prize.

Dainippon Screen group companies have been promoting a modal shift; for example, they began to use railroads for part of their domestic shipments in 2002. As a way of further strengthening and expanding such efforts, they established a ferry transportation system between Nanko Port in Osaka, western Japan, and Shinmoji Port in Fukuoka, southern Japan, and put the system into practice in April 2007. This coastal shipping system has reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions involved in domestic logistics by about 320 tons a year and has resulted in lower costs.

This award was a result of their achievement, in which integrated efforts by a manufacturer, a ferry company and a logistics company significantly reduced CO2 emissions while cutting their logistics costs.
