Oji Paper Reduces Fossil Energy Derived CO2 Emissions by 24% from 1990
A major Japanese paper manufacturer, Oji Paper Co., announced on July 26, 2007 that the Oji Group (comprising Oji Paperboard Co., Oji Specialty Paper Co., and others) succeeded in reducing its consumption of fossil fuels and its fossil-energy-derived carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per produced unit by 20 percent from FY 1990 levels. The group achieved these target figures four years earlier than expected goal of FY 2010. By FY 2006, the group reduced fossil energy consumption by 23 percent and CO2 emissions by 24 percent from FY 1990.

Oji Paper believes that operation of new-energy boilers starting in 2004 promoted the group's energy shift from fossil energy to non-fossil sources, and this significantly contributed to the substantial reductions. The new-energy boilers operate using waste-derived and biomass fuels.

The company has been working to convert fossil fuels to waste-derived fuels, which include solid fuels (mixture of difficult to recycle waste paper and plastic, and waste tires), and biomass fuels derived from construction and demolition waste. Five of these new-energy boilers were operating in FY 2006 and three more are expected to be introduced soon.
