On April 10, 2007, Fujitsu Ltd., a major electronics manufacturer in Japan, announced a new environmental protection program that strengthens its initiatives to address global warming. The company is striving to reduce its CO2 emissions during distribution and transport by 30 percent compared to fiscal 2000 by the end of fiscal 2010.

The program corresponds to the amended Energy Saving Law that came into effect in April 2006. This law obliges transportation companies and manufacturers to make efforts to further reduce CO2 emissions, while disclosing the names of companies whose efforts are found to be insufficient. Fujitsu plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by expanding the use of modal shift and more efficient truck loading procedures, which would reduce the number of trucks in circulation.

The company also aims to reduce CO2 emissions caused by energy consumption at its plants to below fiscal 1990 levels by the end of fiscal 2010. To achieve this target, it will renovate existing factory facilities, adopt more energy-efficient machines and strengthen energy-saving measures in the manufacturing process.
