A game held at the Ibaraki Prefectural Kashima Soccer Stadium on December 2, 2006 between Kashima Antlers and Jubilo Iwata, teams in Division 1 of the J. League (Japan Professional Soccer League), was powered only by renewable energy. The stadium used 12,000 kWh of Green Power Certificates issued by Green Energy Co., Ltd. It was the first game in Japan to be powered in this way.

The renewable electricity generated for these green power certificates was from a photovoltaic facility in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture and a wind station in Akita City, Akita Prefecture. Both facilities were set up and built with funds from citizens.

Kashima Antlers declared on the day that the team had started several ecological movements to promote the use of renewable energy, waste reduction, eco driving to the stadium, etc. Also at the game, reusable dishes were introduced on the largest scale to date at J. League Division 1 matches.
