Paper Cup Recycling Project to Continue among 3 Companies
McDonald's Japan Corp., Coca-Cola (Japan) Co. and Japan Beverage Inc. have decided to continue recycling paper cups with the support of the Shinjuku City Office in January 2007. The project has been conducted on a test basis in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, for the past three years.

These companies together with the manufacturers Token Kogyo Co., Japan Dixie Co., Dai Nippon Printing Co., Toppan Printing Co. and Nihon Tetra Pak K.K. jointly established the Paper Cup Recycling Promotion Council in July 2002, aiming to reduce the waste produced by their businesses and to create a rational recycling system. They started collecting and recycling the cups in December 2004.

Before starting the project, each company collected and incinerated the cups. They introduced special vehicles for collecting the cups from McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Japan Beverage in the Shinjuku area, and then the cups are recycled. This process of cooperation among the companies has successfully reduced collection costs, and produces toilet paper from the recycled cups. The total amount collected by the three companies is an average 2.6 tons per month, reaching approximately 30 tons a year.

The companies plan to upgrade and strengthen the recycling system, and to expand the project to other areas, thereby encouraging more companies to participate.
