In February 2007, Daikin Industries Ltd., a leading Japanese manufacturer of air conditioning systems, announced that in August of this year it will launch a high-efficiency multi air-conditioner for buildings in cold regions. The apparatus provides comfortable heating with significant energy savings even when the outside temperature is quite low.

Daikin Industries conducted tests of the system in Hokkaido and Akita prefectures in northern Japan and achieved the performance levels targeted. The tests were carried out in collaboration with five power companies: Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Tohoku Electric Power Co., Chubu Electric Power Co., Hokuriku Electric Power Co., and the Chugoku Electric Power Co.

With a newly developed two-stage compression system, this system has achieved maximum energy savings of about 22 percent compared to conventional multi air conditioners, with a maximum reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of about 22 percent. It also cuts running costs by up to approximately 27 percent. In addition, it provides improved interior comfort by starting to emit warm air sooner than former models, and causing less of a drop in room temperature while is being defrosted.

These companies plan to continue cooperating to jointly develop energy saving devices.
