Theatre Company Installs Solar Power System in Rehearsal Facility
The Shiki Theatre Company, Japan's biggest theater troupe, has installed a large-scale solar power generating system in its Shiki Arts Center, the world's largest facility for theatre rehearsals and training company actors. The system was manufactured by Kyocera Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer of electronic components and photovoltaic systems, and started full operation on December 1, 2006.

The system has 1,540 solar panels on the Center's roof, and produces a total of 300 kW of power. Annual power generation is estimated at 292,000 kWh, which will lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 192 tons of CO2 emissions a year.

All of the Center's rehearsal rooms are on the south side of the building, and a full wall of windows provides plenty of natural light, so the actors can use a minimal amount of electricity during daytime rehearsals. All lighting equipment at office desks, in aisles and on staircases has manual switches as a way of inducing company members and staff to save electricity.
