Nippon Electric Glass Co., a major Japanese manufacturer of high-tech glass products traded 200 tons of carbon dioxide emission credits to the Funai Consulting Co., it was announced on Oct. 18, 2006. The trade was conducted under the national Voluntary Emissions Trading Scheme, and was the first domestic trade completed.

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment introduced the Voluntary Emissions Trading Scheme in fiscal 2005 with the aim of achieving substantial yet cost-effective reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while accumulating knowledge and experience in domestic CO2 emissions trading. It is an experimental scheme designed to pave the way to full-fledged emissions trading. Both Nippon Electric Glass and Funai Consulting signed on to the Emissions Trading Scheme in 2005.
