Japanese companies have been steadily improving their voluntary environmental activities, according to the fiscal 2005 results of the "Survey on Eco-Friendly Corporate Activities" announced by the Ministry of the Environment on December 26, 2006.

This survey has been conducted every year since 1991. The results for 2005 were compiled from the valid responses from 2,691 companies, about 40 percent of 6,444 companies surveyed, which included corporations listed on a stock exchange and with 500 or more employees.

The results show that 34.7 percent of the respondents issued environmental reports in 2005, an increase from 20.0 percent in 2001 and 26.6 in 2003. They also reveal that 29.4 percent were using environmental accounting in 2005, an increase from 16.9 percent in 2001 and 23.6 percent in 2003. In addition, 80 percent regard eco-friendly activities as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) or social contribution, showing a steady rise in environmental awareness.
