Winners Announced for Nikkei Global Environmental Technology Award 2006
Nihon Keizai Shimbun, a leading business daily in Japan, announced three winners for its Nikkei Global Environmental Technology Award 2006. The winners are Koichi Karukaya of Sekisui Chemical, Inc. (General Manager Wood Business Promotion Department /Urban Infrastructure & Enviromental Products Headquaters); Tatsuya Shimoda of Seiko Epson Corp. (Former Director); and Yasushi Maeda of Sanyo Electric Co. (Chief of Technology I Section, Technology Division for Eneloop Development Project). The award is given once a year to persons or groups who have achieved excellent results in research, study and countermeasures for preservation of the global environment.

Karukaya was awarded for Sekisui's technique to produce structural material for houses using scrap wood from demolition, Shimoda for Seiko Epson's resource- and energy-efficient micro-liquid process to produce electronic devices, and Maeda for Sanyo's development of a new nickel hydride battery that dramatically reduces internal discharge loss.
