Sony Reduced 2005 CO2 Emissions by 2,670 Tons through Transport Modal Shifts
Sony Corporation's CSR (corporate social responsibility) Report 2006 noted that the company changed the mode of domestic transport used from trucks to rail or ship for approximately 14,300 tons of products in fiscal 2005. This resulted in a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 2,670 tons compared to transporting the same volume by truck.

In order to reduce the environmental impacts of transporting its goods, Sony's logistics subsidiary Sony Supply Chain Solutions Inc. (SSCS) shifted the transportation mode from trucks to rail and ship, which emit less CO2 than trucks. The company also promoted co-transportation by sharing rail containers with other companies to reduce CO2 emissions.

SSCS, which is also responsible for Sony's international logistics, is actively pursuing improvements in packing and transport procedures, in cooperation with Sony's engineering and production departments. In fiscal 2004, the company introduced bulk shipping for transporting televisions overseas. The televisions are separated into stands, displays and accessories, and an optimal number of each type of component is packed collectively onto a pallet for transport to the local site, where the televisions are assembled and re-packed individually. This effort has contributed to the reduction of both transportation costs and CO2 emissions.

In fiscal 2005, SSCS introduced returnable cross-border containers for bulk shipping, which reduced packing material waste. In the future, the company also plans to use these containers for shipping parts.
