Japanese Construction Companies to Develop Long-Life Concrete
Kajima Corp. has developed a highly durable concrete, EIEN (Earth, Infinity, ENvironment), under a joint research project with Denki Kagaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha and Ishikawajima Construction Materials Co, according to its September 2006 announcement. Durability has been improved by adding a special admixture for structural densification through reaction with carbonate ions and by treating the surface with carbon dioxide.

When concrete has a dense surface, moisture and chloride do not easily permeate, thus preventing corrosion of inner reinforcing steel. If anticorrosion materials, such as reinforcing fiber, are also used, the concrete can withstand severely salty/corrosive environments.

The company plans to promote the use of this concrete in the constructions of roads, bridge piers, ocean structures that are damaged by salt water.
