The collection rate for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in Japan continued to rise to 65.6 percent in fiscal 2005, up 3.3 points from the previous fiscal year, according to an announcement by the Council for PET Bottle Recycling. The council consists of an association of PET resin and bottle manufactures and four associations of beverage producers.

Thanks to efforts aiming to more accurately track the volume of used plastic bottles, the PET bottles by collected by businesses rose to 97,000 tons, up 20 percent from FY 2004, which contributed to the collection rate rise.

The PET bottle collection rate by local municipalities for PET bottle production (533,000 tons) increased to 47.3 percent, up 0.9 point from fiscal 2004.

The total volume of collected used PET bottles in Japan was 349,000 tons in FY 2005, including 97,000 tons by businesses. Thus, Japan has maintained one of the world's highest collection rates for used PET bottles, 65.6 percent. In contrast, the collection rate in Europe in 2005 was estimated at 34.6 percent, up 3.1 points from the previous year.
