Recyclable Paper IC-Tag Invented in Japan
Hyogo Paper-Box & Corrugated-Box Industry Association has developed paper integrated circuit (IC) tags as a substitute for barcode labels on cardboard boxes and to manage product information. The new tags were presented at an exhibition in September 2006 and received great response.

The association has been working since 2004 to develop recyclable paper IC tags together with University of Hyogo, CARTON i CO.,LTD., Technolinks Corporation and Yaka Paper Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

The paper IC tag has many advantages. It can record far more detailed data than a conventional barcode can, and unlike plastic IC tags, does not have to be removed before recycling. This feature will help to increase the recycling rate. Also the light-weight paper IC tags can be mass-produced, which is sure to make them cheaper than plastic tags.

The association aims to commercialize the new tags within two years. It expects them to appear first in the corrugated-box industry, and next in the manufacturing industry because they can be attached to any product.
