Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., (MES) announced on September 26, 2006, that it had received an order to build a facility to recycle the lees from shochu, a distilled Japanese liquor, from the Saito Recycling Association in Miyazaki Prefecture. This facility would recycle lees generated during production of sweet potato or barley shochu into compound feed materials by concentrating and drying them.

This facility can treat up to 100 tons of lees per day, helping to prevent the marine pollution caused by ocean disposal. In this facility, almost all active ingredients that are separated from shochu lees, concentrated, and dried are recycled into ethanol to be blended with gasoline, or into feed materials.

MES plans to establish a consistent Life-cycle Solution Service (LSS) from the treatment of shochu waste to the utilization of recycled materials. It will also focus on research and development of environmental equipment and various systems for reducing environmental burdens as well as contributing to establishing a recycling-oriented society.
