High-Efficiency Catalyst Developed for Purification of Industrial Exhaust Gases
In July 2006, Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology announced that it has, together with NGK Insulators, Ltd., developed a highly efficient platinum-alumina catalyst for use in purifying industrial exhaust gases. The catalyst is highly porous and resistant to high temperatures.

The new catalyst is able to react at temperatures of about 100 degrees Celsius lower than conventional catalysts, while its thermal resistance has been improved by approximately 200 degrees Celsius. Moreover, it is made from inexpensive aluminum hydroxide and can be produced through simple, low-cost processes, such as freeze-drying.

NGK Insulators is planning to carry out purification tests for exhaust gases using the new catalyst, named platinum-alumina cryogel, in its own sintering furnaces. The cryogel will likely be applied to practical applications where high porosity is required, such as in catalysts or catalyst carriers.
