Ministry Subsidizes 14 'Green Distribution' Model Projects
It was learned on October 24, 2005 that the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) has awarded subsidies to 13 projects, out of 33 model projects that had been recommended by the Green Distribution Partnership Meeting (GDPM) as promoting efficiency in logistics. Subsequently, the ministry announced its decision to grant an additional project on November 21, 2005.

The GDPM was established in April 2005 by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the MLIT, in collaboration with the Japan Institute of Logistics Systems (JILS), the Japan Federation of Freight Industries (JFFI) and the Japan Business Federation, for the purpose of promoting carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction efforts in the field of logistics through cooperation between cargo shippers and distribution businesses. The committee selected the 33 projects as models for promoting efficient distribution on September 2, 2005.

The subsidies have a ceiling of 100 million yen (about US$ 854,700), and are designed to cover one third of the costs of projects, which are expected to reduce CO2 emissions through efforts to improve logistics by means of partnerships among cargo shippers and distribution businesses.

The 14 projects selected include three initiatives to concentrate distribution bases and four projects to promote cooperative transport or distribution at controlled temperatures. The rest are modal shift projects, three to shipping and four to railways.
