New Equipment Cleans Dioxin-Contaminated Soil
Takenaka Corp. and Takenaka Civil Engineering & Construction Co. have jointly started test production of large-sized equipment to decontaminate and detoxify soil that has been contaminated by high concentrations of dioxins or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). It will remove up to 99.9 percent of the toxins through decompression, reduction and heating. The companies announced the launch full-scale sales operations for their soil purification services on August 25, 2005.

The equipment can process 70 tons of soil per day. Manufacturing will be completed by the end of 2005 and actual operations will start in early 2006. The soil-cleaning equipment is portable, can be assembled on-location at contaminated sites, and ranks among the largest in Japan in terms of processing capacity.

The equipment heats soil at relatively low temperatures under low-oxygen and low-pressure conditions. Trial operations verified that it poses no impact on the local environment.
