Yao City, Osaka Prefecture, has launched the Yao City Green Delivery Promotion Council as a joint initiative between the city and the private sector to reduce nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions from cars to curb global warming. Exchanging views and ideas between them, the council plans to promote green delivery using low emission vehicles.

A preparatory meeting was held in February 2005 by 14 organizations which support the idea of green delivery, including citizens' groups, supermarkets and other companies operating in the city. The meeting listed up issues to be resolved, paving the way for the launch of the council. The first meeting of the council was held on May 17, 2005, attended by 18 organizations, including supermarkets, consumer electronics makers, transport companies, citizens groups and government.

The council requests participating companies to establish efficient delivery systems with limited environmental impact, by using qualified vehicles, and improving delivery routes and loading of goods. Educational activities for citizens to stop unnecessary engine idling and to use other eco-driving techniques are also planned. Through the three-way partnership between companies' voluntary efforts, governmental supports and consumers' cooperation, the council aims to play a key role in promoting environmentally-sound delivery of goods.
