Individuals, Businesses Joining National Global Warming Campaign
An increasing number of people and businesses have participated in "Team Minus 6%," a government-led national campaign against global warming that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6 percent from 1990 levels by the period 2008-2012. As of July 6, 2005, 1,435 corporations and organizations and about 48,000 individuals had declared their participation. More and more businesses have been setting up special sections on their websites about this topic. The government's official "Team Minus 6%" website provides up-to-date information.

Yahoo Japan Corp., for instance, launched a special website on June 1 through August 31, 2005 featuring interviews with artists who have a special interest in environmental issues. It will also make a contribution to the construction of "citizens' wind power plants" with revenues from auctions and sales of avatars.

TBS Radio & Communications, Inc. has made eco-friendly shopping bags using recycled material from plastic bottles. To appeal to young listeners, the bags are designed by popular radio hosts. The company plans to offer them on an ongoing basis to help reduce the use of disposable plastic bags at retail stores.

Gunze Ltd., one of Japan's major manufacturers of knit underwear, introduced new lines of products on its special website. Products include comfortable and stylish underwear that are compatible with an eco-friendly businesswear style under the government's national campaign that encourages people to keep office air conditioners set above 28 degrees Celsius in summer in order to save energy, and underwear with new cleaning features that allow it to be washed clean using water alone.
