The Japan Association for the 2005 World Exposition announced on June 16, 2005 that winners have been selected for the Global Eco-Tech Awards, co-sponsored with Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc. They include 100 environmental technologies that are seen as having the potential to contribute to solving global environmental problems and achieving sustainability of the Earth and humanity.

There were 236 technology nominees for the awards, which were recommended by official Expo 2005 participants, international organizations, Japanese local governments and the review board. The winners were selected through document review and a discussion process conducted by the review board (which also included members from overseas), based on the following criteria: (1) contribution to solving environmental problems and to sustainability of humanity and the Earth, (2) innovation suitable for the twenty-first century, and (3) applicability in various cultures around the world.

The themes of many award-winning technologies from inside and outside Japan are related to global warming measures, effective use of renewable energy, resources and recycling. Unique environmental projects from developing countries were selected as well as projects from environmentally advanced countries.

The award ceremony will be held in Nagoya City on September 1, 2005. Each winning technology will receive a cash award of 1 million yen (about U.S.$9,345).
