The Japan Water Forum (JWF) made its start as an incorporated nonprofit organization by holding an inaugural meeting in Tokyo on December 8, 2004. Amid growing international concern over global water issues, the JWF will devote itself to addressing both domestic and international water issues, with the help of many participants from the public and private sectors, including industries, academics and NGOs.

The JWF divides its activities into three fields: think-tank activities, information services by way of international networks, and the development of specialists and enhancement of awareness about water issues.

The JWF has already started research activities on Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), support for the fourth World Water Forum to be held in Mexico in 2006, and the creation of a research team on water problems in Iraq. It plans to hold monthly meetings to release the latest research results and to exchange ideas, and will also be providing water policy recommendations to U.N. agencies.

As the host country of the third World Water Forum in 2003, Japan has been called on to continue its involvement in water issues. The JWF hopes to help address global water issues, and at the same time contribute to industrial development in Japan as well as to international peace.
