"Sendai Declaration" Adopted at First Int'l Conference on Green Purchasing
The "Sendai Declaration on Green Purchasing" was adopted by the First International Conference on Green Purchasing, held on October 6 - 7, 2004 at the Sendai International Center in Sendai City, located in northern Japan. The participation of about 1,000 delegates from 37 countries and regions across the world illustrated that green purchasing is of concern to the whole world.

Green purchasing is an initiative in which consumers of goods or services consider environmental friendliness as well as quality and price, and aim to purchase goods and services that have as little environmental impact as possible from eco-friendly businesses.

The Sendai Declaration has three main parts, dealing with the status and significance of green purchasing, the responsibilities of citizens, nongovernmental organizations, businesses and public organizations and the establishment of an International Green Purchasing Network (IGPN), formed to promote green purchasing on a global scale.

The IGPN will start operations in April 2005. It will work to encourage the sharing of principles, guidelines, good practices and know-how among its members and promote sustainable development.
