On 28 August 2003, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport started a series of test runs on regular routes of a fuel cell bus, the first operation of its kind in the country.

As clean, low-emission vehicles, fuel cell buses are expected to play a leading role in public transportation in the future, and it is hoped that they can be put into practical use as soon as possible. In order to draw up safety and environmental standards, the Ministry has been testing and collecting data on operation of four fuel cell buses on public roads since last year. The Ministry now aims to collect various data including fuel consumption and durability in a situation of commercial operation with passengers on board.
