On June 1, 2003, Nippon Express Co., a major freight company in Japan, began a new type of moving service called "Ecology-Kompo" ("Kompo" means packing). The service uses packaging materials developed by the company that are designed to minimize the amount of packing and unpacking work done by customers before and after removal, as well as to eliminate waste materials that arise from the task. This service was developed by a team mainly consisting of female employees.

All the packaging materials can be reused, so that no waste such as used cardboard boxes will be produced. The company has filed for patents for the newly developed packaging materials.

The service is offered at nearly the same price as the regular moving service, thanks to costs cut by eliminating single-use packing materials, together with shortened work times achieved by improvements in efficiency. For the time being, the company will provide the service for short-haul moves in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka, and plans to expand the service to major cities across the country within the year.
