Sake Brewer Takara Shuzo Releases Environmental Report in Korean
Takara Shuzo Co., Ltd., a major Japanese sake-brewing company, headquartered in Kyoto, Japan prepared a Korean version of its environmental report 2002. The company calls the report the "TaKaRa Green Balance Sheet 2002" and has had it posted on the company's website since February 21, 2003.

A South Korean student currently taking the master's course in environmental management at the Graduate School of Global Environment Studies of Kyoto University played an important role in translating the report into Korean. As part of the graduate school's programs, the student joined a team engaged in environmental issues at the Takara Shuzo headquarters as an intern for 5 months starting in August 2002. The translation was made during this internship.

In South Korea only a small number of companies currently releases environmental reports, so it is hoped that the Takara Shuzo attempt will provide one model of environmental management for South Korean businesses. It is also hoped that more and more enterprises in South Korea will be encouraged to issue environmental reports.

In 1998 Takara Shuzo issued its "TaKaRa Green Balance Sheet" for the first time. It expressed the results of the company's various environmental activities in "ECO" units, which the company created to evaluate environmental performance. The Green Balance Sheet is prepared based on a unique accounting concept they call "Green Ink Accounting." "Green Ink" is a term coined by the company to represent corporate contributions to the global environment, in contrast to the "black and red" ink commonly used to indicate economic performance. The company uses "Environmental Impact Reduction Green Ink" to show efforts to reduce environmental impact caused by corporate activities.
