Sagawa Express Co., one of Japan's leading transportation companies that specializes in delivery services, has now introduced 1,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles into its fleet of trucks.

The 1997 Kyoto Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change served as a turning point after which the company started to adopt CNG vehicles in order to reduce CO2 emissions and help prevent global warming. The company introduced more CNG vehicles every year, and particularly during the last few years, it has been introducing as many as 300 new units per year. As a result, the company reached its goal of 1,000 CNG vehicles earlier than planned.

CNG fueling stations are also indispensable for the introduction of CNG vehicles, and in 1999 Sagawa also set up the industry's first in-house CNG station on the premises of its Tokyo operations, and plans to install in-house stations at its centers in Osaka and Saitama Prefectures. The company plans to increase CNG vehicle introduction and develop more efficient transportation through modal shift.
