On February 8, 2003, Misawa Homes Hokkaido Co. launched sales at a new housing development named "Hills Garden Kiyota," in which all 503 detached houses in the 290,000 square meter development have been equipped with solar power generation systems and heat pumps. This project aims not only to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from electricity production but also to produce clean energy on the scale of an entire community.

Its capacity of 1,500 kilowatts will be the world's largest solar power generation output in one housing community, exceeding the 1,300 kilowatts by the housing complex in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Misawa used recycled heat insulating materials and timbers, and also adopted energy management techniques. Moreover, the company avoided the use of power poles on main streets in order to preserve the scenic beauty, and replanted trees that had grown originally on the site in neighboring forests in order stay with the concept of "a town in the forest."
