NEC Starts to Purchase and Refurbish Used-PCs
NEC Corporation, one of Japan's leading electronics companies, has launched new business operations to refurbish and re-use its own personal computers. The company provides refurbishing services, including erasing data from hard disks and reinstalling operating systems on used-PCs bought from users through its distributors. With the operation tests meeting the same standards as delivery inspections for brand-new PCs, and a six-month warranty, users can purchase the refurbished PCs without concern about quality.

As an initial step, NEC has already started the service to refurbish PCs from distributors. Starting in April 2003, an NEC subsidiary will directly purchase used-PCs from users and sell the refurbished PCs through distributors to expand the business.

This effort will extend a PC's life and help in waste reduction.
