Environmental Ministry to Release Database on Corporate Environmental Reports
Japan's Ministry of the Environment will make available to the public an "Environmental Report Database" on September 1, 2002, as a part of its measures to promote corporate environmental reporting.

Recently, a rapidly increasing number of companies has been preparing environmental reports. This database is intended to allow a wide range of people to compare the contents of numerous environmental reports published in Japan. Another aim is to facilitate interactive communication between businesses and stakeholders.

In the first phase, the Ministry will unveil a database on the items covered by environmental reports for 2001, based on the information provided in the web sites of 180 companies in Japan. In the next phase, a database on the 2002 environmental reports will be made available in October. In the future the Ministry plans to complete a list of all companies that compile environmental reports and a database on the contents of these reports.
