Starting in 2002, Nissan Motor Co., one of the Japanese big-three auto manufacturers, will begin full-scale utilization of bumpers recycled from scrapped cars. Recycled bumpers have a lower cost than and are as strong as those made from virgin materials. By using recycled bumpers Nissan expects to raise its recyclability ratio for passenger cars (by weight) to around 95 percent.

In addition to their use as repair parts, the recycled bumpers will also be used on new vehicles to be sold this year. In cooperation with its partner manufacturers, Nissan is planning to produce about 7,000 recycled bumpers (approx. 30 tonnes) per month in 2002 and 28,000 (approx. 120 tonnes) per month ultimately.
