First FSC "Chain of Custody" Certification for Copy Paper in Japan
Oji Paper Co., Ltd. and Fuji Xerox Office Supply Co., Ltd. recently obtained "chain of custody" (CoC) certification, which covers the management of processing and distribution, from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The FSC is an international non-governmental organization headquartered in Mexico that promotes the certification of timber from sustainably-managed forests. Oji Paper and Fuji Xerox are the first companies in Japan to obtain the FSC's CoC certification for copy paper.

Oji Paper obtained CoC certification for copy paper production in its Ebetsu plant by procuring certified wood chips from Chile. Fuji Xerox Office Supply obtained CoC certification for their sales and distribution.

Fuji Xerox Office Supply plans to use more fresh pulp from tree plantations and FSC-certified wood in the future, while maintaining the current ratio of at least 50 percent used-pulp content in its major products, including all copying and printing papers.

It is expected that a New Zealand plantation project in which Oji Paper is also involved will start shipping FSC-certified wood chips in 2004. By 2010, the companies plan to make all their copying and printing papers entirely from pulp from used paper, plantation wood and certified wood.
