Wisteria color (fuji-iro)
fuji-iro.jpg Wisteria is a color associated with nobility. In Japanese the color "fuji-iro" is named after the "fuji" flower (wisteria), which also happens to have the same written character as in the name of Fujiwara, a clan that effectively controlled Japan during the Heian Period (AD 794 to 1185). During the Roman Empire two millennia ago, only the Emperor could wear a tunic of this color, and silk dyed this color was apparently considered to be as valuable as gold. The reason that this color came to be a color of nobility around the world is that the process of dyeing purple hues into textiles is among the most difficult for dyers.
