YKK AP Inc., a major Japanese construction material manufacturer specializing in windows and openings, introduced on May 18, 2012, three new products for detached houses that help lower energy consumption during summer. Air conditioners are said to account for more than 50 percent of household energy consumption during peak hours in summer, and 71 percent of heat gain is calculated to occur at openings (windows). YKK's new products provide thermal barriers over windows to reduce the burden on air-conditioners.

Snapshade, a sunshade featuring easy installation and weather resistant fabric, blocks over 60 percent of solar heat in the summer. The product is fastened to a wall or window frame without the need for making any holes by using YKK's snap buttons, which are attached to the sunshade and installation surface with double-sided adhesive tape.

Their Western-style blind, called the New Outer Shade, is equipped with a spring to roll it up. It cuts solar heat by up to 81 percent, and in the off-season or during strong winds it can be put away in the main body's compact box.

Screen Terrace, a modular terrace system, opens to three directions and has an exterior roll-down screen for each opening from its roof. Occupants can turn off their air conditioner and enjoy cool outdoor air in the evening without worrying about mosquitoes. Openings can be designed up to three meters in width, and the screen can be rolled down and fixed at any height.
