On September 6, 2011, Coca-Cola System Japan, which consists of Coca-Cola Japan and 12 bottling partners across Japan, with its international business slogan, "Live Positively - Make a positive difference in the world", decided to install light emitting diodes (LEDs) for product display in the company's vending machines. This will be one of the company's environmental initiatives aiming at a more sustainable society and will apply to all appropriate vending machines purchased from the year of 2012 for canned and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-bottled beverages.

LED lighting reduces energy consumption by about 70 percent when compared with fluorescent lighting. Coca-Cola System, with the soft drink industry's voluntary action plans, has reduced annual energy consumption of vending machines to about one-third or less over the last decade through the various strategies to improve energy-saving performance and the introduction of new technology. The aim for introducing LED lighting is to further reduce power consumption.

To date, Coca-Cola System has been actively working on contributions to global warming prevention by promoting HFC-free vending machines, the introduction of energy-saving technology, the development of charity vending machines that collect funds or help support systems during a disaster, and the introduction of vending machines with solar panels or living green tops. Coca-Cola System aims to expand its use of vending machines that coexist with a sustainable society by independently and continuously improving the environmental performance of the vending machines.
