Daikin Industries, Ltd., a leading Japanese manufacturer of air conditioning systems, is offering several energy-saving options other than the usual method of simply raising the temperature setting. The options can be installed on existing industrial air conditioners in company buildings. Daikin's suggestions are in response to a request by the Japanese government to cut electricity consumption by 15 percent from the previous year in Tokyo, and other areas served by Tohoku Electric Company, in order to relieve power shortages in the summer of 2011.

The options include a system called 'auto clean panel' that automatically cleans the filter everyday cutting energy consumption by about 20 percent when compared with once-a-year cleaning. For outdoor units, the company suggests a sprinkler system to cool the unit, and an ice thermal storage system. The latter system makes ice at night when electricity demand is low and then utilizes it for cooling, which considerably reduces energy consumption during the daytime.

Furthermore, the company has introduced an effective method for power saving called the 'power demand control,' which controls the amount of power consumption during peak hours. This can be done through a remote control or substrate in the outdoor unit. Using this method, power use is reduced by 20 to 40 percent. The company has also introduced other comparatively easy energy-saving practices on its website, with the aim of further promoting such efforts. These measures include the use of heat shield paint with high solar reflectance, particularly for infrared light, which helps to reflect heat from the building.
