The Research Association of Hydrogen Supply/Utilization Technology (HySUT), an organization comprising 13 companies, and Fukuoka Prefecture started test operations for the Kitakyushu Hydrogen Town Project in cooperation with Fukuoka Prefecture and the city of Kitakyushu on January 15, 2011. This effort is part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's (METI) goal to create a hydrogen energy-based society in the future.

Using hydrogen generated as by-product at steel plants., Kitakyushu Hydrogen Filling Station in the Higashida area, Yahatahigashi Ward, Kitakyushu, the project supplies odor-mixed hydrogen to neighboring housing complexes, single-family homes, commercial complexes and public facilities via pipelines. The project will verify the test operations of hydrogen fuel cells at homes and businesses, and an electric power supply system by interoperations among the fuel cells, solar power generation and secondary batteries.

In order to provide more insight on the stable supply, security of safety, and appropriate charging system in terms of commercialization of hydrogen supply by pipelines, the project will verify odor mixing and deodorizing technologies, hydrogen gas measuring systems for billing and operability of the hydrogen fuel cells. This is the first community level demonstration in the world which will operate fuel cells using hydrogen supplied by pipelines through the town.
