Suntory Midorie Installs Japan's Largest Green Wall System, 'Flower Wall'

Suntory Midorie, an environmental greening company in Japan, installed a wall greening system called "flower wall" on the wall of Multimedia Kyoto, a consumer electronics store that opened in front of Japan Railway (JR) Kyoto Station and is run by major Japanese electronics retailer Yodobashi Camera, on November 5, 2010. Measuring 1,120 square meters in total, it is the nation's largest wall garden.

With the brand name Midorie (a Japanese phrase meaning "toward green"), Suntory expresses its mission to make Japan and the Earth greener. Midorie's core products, greening systems for rooftops and walls ("green roof" and "flower wall" respectively), substitute soil with Pafcal, a new urethane-based substance developed by the company. Compared to using soil, Pafcal's benefits include a lighter weight, easier management, and better plant growth.

The flower wall at Multimedia Kyoto was set up on the lower end of the building's north and west walls, and measures 7 meters high by 160 meters wide. In addition to using Liriope muscari and fringed iris, the flora of Kyoto, the company mixed in Hedera canariensis to provide rich greenery all year round.
