Japan's Toshiba Corporation announced on December 3, 2008, that it will accelerate the development of its carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) technology by building a pilot plant at Sigma Power Ariake Co. Ltd.'s Mikawa Power Plant, in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture. CCS is a technology that separates and captures CO2 emitted by thermal power plants and many other industrial sites, and then stores it underground. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2009, and a demonstration test using real flue gas is expected to begin in August.

The Mikawa pilot plant is employing a separation and capture system which uses an amine solvent that consumes minimal energy, and it captures 10 tons of CO2 a day from the boiler flue gas of the company's coal-fired thermal power plant. Beyond proving the system's performance, research staff will carry out the verification work required for the future design of utility-scale power plant applications, including integration with turbines and other power plant equipment, as well as developing operational know-how.

Toshiba is targeting installation of its system at other demonstration plants being planned in Japan and overseas, in parallel with the demonstration tests at the Mikawa pilot plant. The company's goal is to meet the emerging demand for commercial-scale CCS systems for thermal power plants, an area expected to expand substantially worldwide by around 2015. The company plans to accelerate its research and development efforts to support the early establishment of its proprietary technology.
