NEC Achieves Record Shipment of Refurbished PCs

Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

NEC Corporation announced on December 11, 2007 that it has shipped a cumulative total of 100,000 refurbished personal computers (PCs) from September 2003 to December 2007. After buying back a used PC, the company erases data from the hard disk, cleans the exterior, and reinstalls an operating system before selling it as an "NEC Refreshed PC" with a warranty.

NEC also has been promoting an "NEC Refreshed PC Afforestation Project" since April 2005, one of several afforestation schemes. The company plants a tree every time it buys back a PC from a user who chooses to participate in the project. The cumulative number of trees planted has now reached 64,310. Assuming 20 years of tree growth, this will result in the reduction of 35,724 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, including the CO2 emissions reduced due to the recycling of 100,000 used PCs.

As a way of helping realize a recycling-based society, the company aims to reduce waste emissions and environmental impacts by making further efforts to promote its "NEC Refreshed PC" program and "NEC refreshed PC Afforestation project."
