Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd., one of the major Japanese steel manufacturers, concluded a basic agreement with Osaka University on plans to establish a joint research project for rare metal recycling on March 20, 2007. The project will involve the collaboration of by three researchers from Sumitomo's Corporate Research and Development Laboratories (CRD Laboratories) and two faculty members from Osaka University.

CRD Laboratories specialize in industrial and R&D technology in manufacturing processes, and Osaka University provides academic knowledge about recycling. Combining these skills, the project aims to create basic technologies that will improve the recycling of rare metals generated in steel making processes, and the utilization efficiency of low-grade iron ores.

Sumitomo Metals intends to launch similar kinds of joint projects with a variety of universities in order to increase its R&D output, and to focus on fostering young researchers.
