Toshiba Home Lighting Co., a home lighting equipment maker belonging to the Toshiba Group of Japan, launched a series of Japanese-style lighting fixtures made from plant-based plastic on April 1, 2007. They are the first products of this kind to be marketed in the lighting industry.
This eco-friendly plastic is polylactic acid resin made from corn starch, and is used to make sheet-shaped shades for Japanese style ceiling-type lights and the bodies of remotes.
It has been found that, based on product lifecycle from manufacturing to disposal, carbon dioxide emissions are 30 percent lower with the plant-based plastic than petroleum-based plastic.
