Learn from Strategic Environmental Management Game

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture NGO / Citizen

The Strategic Environmental Management Game was created by the Japan Environmental Education Forum (JEEF) to allow players to compete as corporate managers and test their environmental management skills. The game ultimately aims to provide players with opportunities to increase awareness of environmental issues. Companies such as East Japan Railway Co. and Mos Food Services have begun using it as part of their staff training curriculum.

During each turn, participants undertake one of the various project activities shown in the distributed cards. Depending on the results of players' business decisions, scores in three areas go up and down; eco-points (reflecting environmental factors), money-points (reflecting profits) and environmental brand value points (reflecting societal environmental assessment). Accordingly, corporate management skills are ranked based on total points and the player with the highest score wins.

The game helps players enjoy learning why companies implement environmental-friendly projects, as well as supplementing basic knowledge about the environment. Team play contributes to increasing communication and sharing ideas among players.
