Japanese NPO Proposes Creating Green Economy for Sustainable Society

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture NGO / Citizen

The Japan Association of Environment and Society for the 21st Century (JAES21), a non-governmental organization (NGO) aiming to build a sustainable society, has defined a 'Green Economy' as an economic system that can harmonize the economy and the environment, so that a balanced relationship may be established among economic, environmental and social elements. In 2003, JAES21 formed a new section specifically to explore this concept. This section has since been working to compile proposals for the public.

Initially, JAES21 studied the Green Economy from several perspectives, such as Food, Work and Purchasing. In terms of Work, the group concluded the purpose of working is to support a family and raise the next generation, or to enrich one's own life and society by earning money more effectively. Based on this purpose, the group proposed the importance of diverse working styles, as well as actual working styles that make current and future generations happier. At present, the group is actively taking up the theme 'Green Economy and Education'.
