On July 20, 2006, the Japanese Association for Electric Home Appliances (AEHA) released its annual report for FY 2005 on the recycling of household electric appliances. The AEHA conducts research, makes policy proposals and implements measures based on its comprehensive study of home appliance issues.

Following the FY 2004 edition, the association's first annual report on appliance recycling, the FY 2005 annual report summarizes the five-year achievements since April 2001 when the Law for Recycling of Specified Kinds of Home Appliances was enacted. The report includes examples of recycling to clarify for readers what has been achieved.

The Home Appliances Recycling Law requires the collection and recycling of four types of used household appliance: television sets, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners. According to the report, 52 million units of four target product categories were collected and recycled while the weight of recycled materials reached two million tons during the last five years. The report confirms that the recycling rate required under the law was achieved.
