Environmentally Friendly Tunnel Lighting System Released

Matsushita Electric Works Ltd., a major manufacturer of electronic products in Japan, started accepting orders for its new environment-friendly light fixtures on June 1, 2006. The lights contain a sensor that suppresses unnecessary brightness caused by ambient temperatures or at the start of a new bulb's life. This system reduces energy use by approximately 20 percent and total running costs by up to 46 percent.

With numerous tunnels throughout her mountainous terrain, Japan consumes vast amounts of energy for tunnel lighting on a daily basis. As concerns deepen over the global environment, improvements in energy efficiency and resource saving are vital. The development of this new product reflects the current situation.

In addition to energy savings, the new product features an extended lifespan of up to 60,000 hours by incorporating Everlight, a technologically enhanced lamp that does not require electrodes or filaments, also developed by Matsushita. Another feature of the new product is that it is easy to disassemble. Its power supply needs to be replaced once every 10 years and it can be easily separated from the other parts, ensuring a longer lifespan for the platform unit and radiant shield, which need to be replaced every 20 years. The product also uses smaller amounts of toxic substances, such as lead and sexivalent chrome. Thus, a great level of environmental consideration has gone into this product.
