Formaldehyde Source Detection Sheet Developed

A simplified formaldehyde source detection sheet has been developed by the Building Research Institute and the Comprehensive Research Organization for Science and Society in Japan, it was announced on March 23, 2006. The sheet was designed based on their joint study of sick house syndrome countermeasures, as part of the General Technology Development Project being promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

When high interior concentrations of formaldehyde are detected, identifying its sources is vital before appropriate measures can be taken. Conventional measurement methods can determine average concentrations in indoor spaces, but are unable to clearly identify the emission source.

By simply inserting the newly developed sheet into an adaptor and placing it on the floor, wall, or ceiling, formaldehyde concentrations can be determined. The sheet is able to measure not only diffusion from surface of building materials, but also aerial concentrations inside small spaces, such as drawers, dressers and closets within about two hours. Synergy Laboratories Inc. started selling the sheet in May.
