Val Laboratory Corp., a Japanese software developer, started a website service on December 7, 2005, the "CO2 Eki-Supaato" (Japanese only) that calculates total CO2 emissions from various transportation modes. The corporation provides the free service on the "Team Minus 6% " home page to encourage more frequent use of public transport in order to curb global warming.

The original version of the "Eki-Supaato" service provides information on required transfers, fares, traveling durations, and distances when users input data on their starting point and destination. In addition to the above information, the new version offers a comparison of public and private transportation modes in terms of CO2 emissions calculated on the basis of data published in 2005 by the Foundation for Promoting Personal Mobility and Ecological Transportation.

Results are shown in terms of comparisons among various modes of transport, so users can see the differences at a glance. These normally show that using public transport is far more effective than using a private vehicle for reducing CO2 emissions.
